My Favorite Things: Healthy Smoothies

When it comes to constantly maintaining a healthy diet, it can be a little challenging at times. Especially when you have a busy schedule and you are always on the go with meetings and appointments and simply everyday life.

One of my favorite healthy treats that is full of vitamins and nutrients that you can tailor- make to your specific tastes and nutritional needs is a smoothie. For a rich thick smoothie start by adding a few cubes of ice at the bottom of your blender. Then I usually add a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables, such as frozen mixed berries, which are low in calories and high in fiber and contain flavonoids that may help to prevent forms of cancer. Strawberries are high in vitamin C and blueberries are great for reducing inflammation.

Other than berries I also include a Gala apple. It’s true what they say about the apple: – “An apple a day….” Some of the health benefits include lowering cholesterol levels, boosting your immune system, decreasing your risk of diabetes, and lowering your risk of heart disease. But that’s just the fruits.

Including all fruits and no vegetables, will defeat the purpose, so also use V-8 V-Fusion Light, which is a fruit and vegetable juice mix, or add vegetables such as spinach and kale. Spinach is an anti-inflammatory, contains antioxidants, lowers blood pressure, contains lutein to protect your eyes from cataracts, promotes bone and brain health, and has anti-cancer properties.

Kale is excellent as a support for detoxification, an anti-inflammatory, support for good  metabolism for weight loss, strengthen the immune system because of its healthy balance of omega- 3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and, it promotes healthier hair and nails. Kale also contains calcium and vitamins K and D.

Finally I sprinkle a tablespoon of ground flaxseed on top which is also full of omega- 3 fatty acids, then I blend everything all together into a think, rich and delicious healthy smoothie that I can drink for breakfast or on the go for a quick meal when I simply run out of time.

If you haven’t enjoyed a healthy smoothie lately, you should consider what delicious and nutritious fruit and vegetable combinations you can mix together to perhaps improve any of your health conditions.

Healthy eating!
